How do I fix Discord screen share no audio?

Before you move on to our in-depth solutions further down the page, there are a couple of workaround solutions that people have found. It’s also worth trying our ‘do these quick things first’ section to make sure that there isn’t a simple answer.

Workaround solutions

Using a workaround solution may allow you to get the audio working straight away. If you’re in a rush to share your screen and audio, then try these. Before the next time you use Discord, though, you should try our in-depth solutions to find a permanent solution to the problem.

Use push to talk

This is done by changing the input mode setting in Discord to Push to Talk. Sometimes this will override whatever is blocking the audio transmission. But as the name suggests you have to keep pushing. To transmit audio, you will have to hold down your push to talk button.

To do this…

  1. Go to User Settings on Discord (the cogwheel icon in the bottom left corner)
  2. Under App settings on the left side choose Voice and Video
  3. Scroll down to the next page. In the Input Mode box, you will see a tick box for Voice Activity and also a tick box for Push to Talk
  4. Tick Push to Talk
  5. You’ll be prompted to assign a key on your keyboard as your push to talk button

After you have done this, return to your Discord screen share and see if the push to talk feature allows the other person to hear your audio.

Avoid fullscreen

When you screen share with other people, at the top of the Discord page choose the option of switching to Application Window instead of Your Entire Screen.

Do these quick things first

Doing these quick things may resolve a minor problem that is causing Discord screen share audio to fail.

Toggle sound on and turn the volume up

Make sure that sound is toggled on Discord and that the volume is turned to maximum. If the sound is off or the volume is very low, this will be blocking the sound or making it inaudible.

  1. Go to User Settings on Discord (the cogwheel icon in the bottom left corner)
  2. Look for the sound toggle and make sure it is turned on
  3. Find the volume settings and make sure they are all at maximum. The default setting is maximum and so it will not hurt to have them at maximum

Reset your computer’s audio settings

The audio settings on your computer may just be blocking audio transmissions. Try resetting them and see if this solves the problem

  1. Search for Settings in the Search bar and open Settings
  2. Go to System and then Sound
  3. Go to Advanced Sound Options
  4. Click Reset
  5. Allow the process to finish

Restart your computer

Log out of Discord, restart your computer and then relaunch Discord. Sometimes a simple restart of your computer and a relaunch of the Discord app will fix minor problems.

The next thing to do is make sure your audio drivers are updated to the latest version. If even one audio driver is out of date this can cause an issue. This is often done automatically by your device, but it’s worth checking this isn’t causing an issue.

On Windows 10…

  1. Search for Device Manager in the Search bar and then open it

  5. Select Update Driver
  6. Allow the process to finish

If Windows is unable to find any updates you can find out who the manufacturer of your audio card is and visit their website to download an update.

This will often resolve other audio issues if you have been experiencing more problems than just with Discord. Relaunch the Discord application and try to screen share with sound again and see if your Discord audio now works.

Option #7: Check the application which you are trying to share

Your Discord screen share no audio problem may be caused by the program which you are trying to share, rather than by Discord.

Go to the application and check sharing audio is enabled. Alternatively, there may be another issue with the program which you need to fix in order for a Discord screen share to work correctly. Fix any problem you are able to find and then try Discord again.

Option#8: Clear the Discord cache

The Discord cache stores files to help Discord to run more efficiently. If any of these files are corrupted they may be preventing the Discord screen sharing feature from transmitting audio. The Discord cache is stored in your computer’s roaming data directory.

  1. Log out of Discord and close it
  2. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box
  3. In the search box, type ‘%appdata%’ and press enter
  4. The roaming data directory will open
  5. Right-click on the Discord folder and then delete it

After you have done this you should restart your computer. When you are back on, open the Discord app and try screen sharing again. Hopefully your Discord screen share no audio problem is fixed.

Option #9: Update discord

If your version of Discord is out of date, the Discord screen share audio feature will often fail to work. Try updating Discord and see if this resolves the issue.

  1. Press the Windows key + R at the same time to open the Run dialog box
  2. Type ‘%localappdata%’ and click OK
  3. The Discord folder will open
  4. Click on it and then click on the update.exe file
  5. Follow any prompts to complete the update process

Relaunch Discord after the update process has finished and see if Discord screen share now works with audio.

Discord may have become corrupted. Try uninstalling it and then reinstalling the latest version.

  3. Click on Programs
  4. Go to Programs and Features
  5. You’ll see a list of apps

After you have finished, go to the website and download and install the latest version. Open the application and see if you can do a Discord screen share with audio.

Antivirus programs can interfere with Discord and block audio transmission. If you temporarily disable your antivirus then you may be able to fix the problem.

Before you do anything log out of and close Discord.

If you’re on Windows 10, follow the instructions below to turn off Windows Defender. After you’ve finished, return to Discord and try to screen share with audio. Make sure that you turn Windows Defender back on after you have finished.
